Bad breath — the medical term is halitosis — is very common, and almost everyone has it from time to time. Yet it's a sensitive subject: you often can't smell it yourself, while it can be awkward in social contact. The good news: in the vast majority of cases the cause is simply in the mouth, and there's plenty you can do about it. Top Lach Dental Practice in Utrecht lines up the facts for you.
Where does bad breath come from?
Most bad breath starts in the mouth itself. Bacteria break down food residue and produce sulphur compounds that smell unpleasant. Common causes:
- Coating on the tongue: lots of bacteria gather at the back of the tongue — a frequently forgotten cause.
- Gum inflammation and cavities: inflamed gums and decay give bacteria free rein. Read more about gum treatment.
- A dry mouth: saliva rinses bacteria away. Too little saliva — from drinking little, medication, or overnight — leads to bad breath more quickly.
- Smoking, alcohol and strong foods such as garlic and onion.
- Sometimes a strict low-carb diet (ketosis) plays a part.
Very occasionally the cause lies elsewhere (sinuses, stomach), but that's the exception — usually it's the mouth.
What you can do yourself to stay fresh
- Brush twice a day and clean between the teeth daily (floss or interdental brushes).
- Clean your tongue with a tongue scraper or the back of your brush — this often makes the biggest difference.
- Drink enough water to prevent a dry mouth.
- Sugar-free gum stimulates saliva and helps temporarily.
- Cut down on smoking and alcohol.
Note: mouthwash and mints mask the smell, but don't remove the cause.
When to see the dentist or dental hygienist?
Does the bad breath keep coming back despite good oral care? Then it's wise to come in. There's often an identifiable cause behind it, such as gum inflammation or a cavity. Our dental hygienist removes tartar and plaque you can't reach at home, and during a check-up we look for the cause together — so you tackle not just the smell, but the problem itself.
